Of Britain’s Imperial conflicts in Africa, perhaps few were more bizzare than the Ashanti Wars. From the start, the British Gold Coast administration underestimated its opponent. In 1824, Sir Charles Macarthy led an army into the interior. While his bandsmen answered the war drums with “God save the King”, the Ashanti army quietly encircled the British force.

Fifty years later, Sir Garnet Wolseley mounted Britain’s first full scale jungle offensive against the Ashanti King, Kofi Karikari. Ashanti could no longer be allowed to remain an independent power. King and leading chiefs were tricked into exile. But a British attempt to capture the vanished Golden Stool, symbol of the Ashanti State, led to a farcical but horrific three month siege.

The Ashanti Wars show British colonial policy at extremes of disinterest and acquisitiveness. The Ashanti opposition was remarkably fearlesss and awesome. The facts provide a historical satire, an astonishing mixture of horror, heroism and adventure.

So begins an affair in which Gordon compulsively violates Louisa’s body and psyche, while Louisa matches his onslaughts with an insolent submission. As their entanglement deepens, Louisa finds a heady emotional satisfaction beneath the humiliation that Gordon inflicts, and comes to a new understanding of her troubled history and the self that has emerged from it. Originally published under a pseudonym in 1966, Gordon was banned in England and Germany for its frank sexual content, and even today it remains provocative in its fearless probing of the boundaries of consent and submission. Burns – Burnsiana: A Casket of Characteristic Gems by W R Donald

Though this copy is not dated, I believe the original copy was published in 1898. I am presuming that WR Donald was the WR Donald who was the President of the Bradford Typographical Society and a witness to the events that led to the birth of the Independent Labour Party in the 1890’s. Google has little on him concentrating instead on a Black American Football Player.

Donald published a number of works.
