It was explained to me that men’s paperbacks survive and women’s don’t because men by nature are hoarders. Men read a book and then save it, whilst women read a book then pass it on. It was worked out that men’s books were read about 1.7 times, women’s 5.6. Whatever “women’s” titles are rare which is why I found some of these authors difficult to track down. one of them, “The Man She Loved” lists no author, but I found one bookseller who attributed it to Jean Hope, I don’t know if this was correct or not.

A Natural History of all the most remarkable Quadrupeds. Birds, Fishes, Serpents, Reptiles and Insects in the known World.

The spine is split but the book is tight though half of page 19 is missing, I haven’t done a thorough count but I think all the illustrations are complete. approx.. 7″ by 4 1/2″ 338 pages.

Just a few of the illustrations;

The flying fish seems to be looping the loop.

The Lion is not exactly lying down with the lamb on the frontispiece, standing up and no lamb, but you get the picture. ON THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE – F L Green

Corgi 1953 1st vg On the Night of the Fire, released in the United States as The Fugitive, is a 1939 British thriller film, directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and starring Ralph Richardson and Diana Wynyard. The film is based on the novel of the same name by F. L. Green. It was shot on location in Newcastle upon Tyne and was released shortly after the outbreak of World War II. It is regarded as an early example of British film noir, with the kind of subject matter and filming style which fell completely out of favour during the war years – when British studios felt that cinemagoers would want either light entertainment and escapism or topical patriotic propaganda pieces – and would not be taken up again until the later 1940s. Film critic David Quinlan describes the film as “grim but gripping”. Andrew Spicer, in his book European Film Noir, writes: “A riveting psychological study.
