Nat Gould & Mellifont “Racing Novels”

A precursor  to Dick Francis? Must admit I had not heard of him. The “A Racecourse Tragedy” seems pretty rare if you check the price on ABE. These “Mellifont” paperbacks are not in the best condition two have a piece of the spine missing and one, “A Stable Mystery”, like the Donald when serving in the forces is concerned, has no spine at all.

Mellifont Racing Novels

I think 1949, one of the first in the series by Frank Brendon is probably the rarest but is in the worse condition the series seems to be mainly Nat Gould with a couple by Edward Woodward and one each by Vann Larr and Frank Brendon. The price is for a single book (specify which one) delivered to any UK address, not by horse.

Fifty-Two Pickup – Elmore Leonard

Porno sex, ruthless blackmail, savage murder – just openers in a game of big money and brutal betrayal….. “Excitement…an armtwisting pageturner”

What a “blurb” and Soon to be a major movie!

Fifty Two Pickup – Elmore Leonard

I am not usually a fan of photographic covers but I can make an exception for this one.

The Trackless Thing by Justin Atholl

A “Mushroom” Publishers example, 32 (though it says 31 on last page) small booklet 6″ X 4″,. The “Mushroom” period is a reference to the times of paper rationing during and after WWII. Ex servicemen were offered a paper ration as a “resettlement initiative” that was after books were published on any paper that could be found, some were printed on greaseproof butter wrappers, and were very short, though this example is particularly small and short.

The Trackless Thing 244

that entered houses, killing dogs with maniacal cruelty: a Thing that left absolutely no track or trace of itself: a Thing that shot men with bullets fired by a gun lying in a locked drawer…this was the problem faced by Superintendent Lakin.

I can only find one other copy for sale on ‘tinternet at over £50.

The Trackless Thing 244

The Trackless Thing by Justin Atholl (Pseudonym of UK journalist and author Thomas Sidney Denham (1906-1968))

Published by Everybody’s Books – Manchester 32 page undated booklet. “The Trackless Thing” by Justin Atholl was published in 1943 by Everybody’s Books, a short-lived wartime outfit operated by the Kelly brothers. The cover art, unsigned, was used on a handful of titles by this publisher, and also by their partner, the Mitre Press.”

Hank Janson – Stephen Daniel Frances -aka – HANK JANSON

I am posting this text from home and have been more than surprised about how little Google or Wikipedia have on this author, not only because he was so prolific, but also the pivotal roll he had in the UK censorship fiasco that culminated in the stage managed Lady Chatterley Show Trial.

The persecution he faced in the UK that saw him move to Spain to avoid arrest, Reginald Head (the illustrator of many Hank Janson titles) changing his name to Cy Webb and the publishers ending up in jail. All of these “facts” may not be true as I am relying on my memory, though I am sure I have a full account of the trials and tribulations somewhere in the shop.

The list below have been stock checked this year, so theoretically I know where they are

Hank Janson

Today the vast majority of people will not even have heard of Hank Janson but the number of books he sold in the 50’s and 60’s far outstrips the number sold by Booker Prize winners, yet the “inteligencia” look down their privileged noses at “Popular fiction” or in this case “Hard Boiled Fiction”.

Granted the covers on these 60’s example are not a patch on the covers Reginald Head was driven out of the country for painting. The persecution and trials of the 50’s is a fascinating story in itself culminating as it did in the fake, arranged Lady Chatterley Trial that voiced the now notorious test of respectability “Would you let your servant read that”

However I digress, as a great lover of the 50’s art work, and not totally unmoved by later covers, I have over the years assembled significant examples of the genre, Hank Janson in particular. I realise that the market for this important contribution to literature is rapidly declining, a pity in many ways, not least my ability to sell copies.

Stock This is a list (probably not complete) that I think I have.
