This is not listed on any site that I know of for sale. Lloyd Cole seems to have published a wide range of books but not in great numbers (only 86 listings on ABE). James Booth seems to have made contributions to compilations. This is typical of War Time publications (1944) in that it is a 32 page booklet. I don’t know what it is really worth despite being very rare, but I am willing to part with it for £10.00 (that includes UK P&P)

Of Their Own Choice – Capt. Peter Churchill D.S.O.

Corgi 1955 1st vg Of Their Own Choice was the first of three books describing his wartime experience in the French section of the Special Operations Executive. He describes his initial training at Warnborough Manor, near Guildford, in sabotage, Morse code, use of firearms, bridge demolition, and French military drill; and then to the Scottish Highlands near Mallaig, for map reading, orienteering, weapons and explosives training, close combat, and physical training; and then parachute training at Ringway near Manchester. The final training was at the Finishing School at Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest where he learnt railway sabotage, inconspicuous behaviour, codes, cover stories, how to build up networks, and how to behave under interrogation. Of 14 people who began the training, Churchill was one of only three who graduated. He was assigned to the French Section in June 1941, and given his French identity card with a false identity. His first mission was to be infiltrated into the French Riviera by submarine in order to inspect three SOE networks in Antibes, Marseille and Lyons, evaluate their strengths weaknesses, assess their needs, and give them instructions. He was also to provide them with funds to continue their work. He was assisted by American agent, Virginia Hall. Having completed his mission he crossed the Pyrenees on foot and returned to the UK via Gibraltar to report back to SOE Headquarters. It was explained to me that men’s paperbacks survive and women’s don’t because men by nature are hoarders. Men read a book and then save it, whilst women read a book then pass it on. It was worked out that men’s books were read about 1.7 times, women’s 5.6. Whatever “women’s” titles are rare which is why I found some of these authors difficult to track down. one of them, “The Man She Loved” lists no author, but I found one bookseller who attributed it to Jean Hope, I don’t know if this was correct or not.

Corgi 1953 1st vg On the Night of the Fire, released in the United States as The Fugitive, is a 1939 British thriller film, directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and starring Ralph Richardson and Diana Wynyard. The film is based on the novel of the same name by F. L. Green. It was shot on location in Newcastle upon Tyne and was released shortly after the outbreak of World War II. It is regarded as an early example of British film noir, with the kind of subject matter and filming style which fell completely out of favour during the war years – when British studios felt that cinemagoers would want either light entertainment and escapism or topical patriotic propaganda pieces – and would not be taken up again until the later 1940s. Film critic David Quinlan describes the film as “grim but gripping”. Andrew Spicer, in his book European Film Noir, writes: “A riveting psychological study.
