Don’t hesitate to ask me about any other books you are interested in I only list a small fraction of my stock.

“Dalesman” Mini Books

I don’t restrict myself to the “Dalesman” magazine, I look out for all their publications even when they stray out of God’s Own County (GOC).

Exploring: The Lake District, North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Coast (three Books)

Lakeland A to Z

Matlock

Peak District Walks

Roman Derbyshire

Shepherds Crooks and Walking Sticks

Walking in; Airedale : Bronte Country : North Yorkshire Moors : Lower Wharfedale : Upper Wharfedale

Yorkshire Mysteries and Oddities

All are available along with many other Dalesman publications, though if you intend visiting my shop and you are interested let me know as they are all at home as I intend getting round to reading them, especially the “walking” books. As the bumper sticker should say “Bibliophiles just read about it”.

SPORTS BUDGET 1929 & 1930

I have 20 issues of Sports Budget. I can’t find out a lot about them but would be willing to sell at £5.00 a copy. I did find this description;

“Excellent weekly newspaper concentrating mostly on football-either short stories or factual reports. First issue January 13th 1923. It is printed on newspaper stock. Printed and published by The Amalgamated Press from the Fleetway House Farringdon Street London. It had 24 pages and sold for 2d.

Amalgamated Press had tried different football formats earlier with Football Favourite (4/9/20-30/4/21) and Sports for Boys (20/10/20-21/4/21) and seemingly came up with the winning and much more long lived Sports Budget.

The main bulk of its stories were dedicated to football, although there were alternatives in the shape of cricket and rugby.”

Readers Digest – Classics

There is a real snobbery in the second hand book trade against Readers Digest, it may have some foundation in their “aggressive” sales technique for the digest, or it could be founded in the bias against “condensed books” but where would doctors and dentist waiting rooms have been in the past without Readers Digests (or National Geographic)?

I could also be pat of the second hand book dealers general unloving view of “Coffee Table” publications. All of the above are probably unfair and unjustified, but in the case of the “Classic” series the bias id definitely unjustified. The books are well bound, well presented with good clear printing, the only criticism  I could make (being churlish) is the definition of what are classics has a definite American flavour. But in the light of the very strange inclusions in the “Oxford World Classics” the criticism is definitely churlish.

I have about 10 foot of these titles in my shop all at the bargain price of £4.50.

CUMBRIA – E Jeffrey covers

Because they are published by the Dalesman, cataloguing these editions of the Cumbria magazine has taken my stock of Dalesman publications to over 1000. These shown are all available for £2.50 each in the shop. Posted to any UK address £7.00. I do have about 300 or 400 more but they have not yet been catalogued.

On quality paper with illustrations. 286 pages with an index with maps on endpapers (though front map does have a private bookplate (George Horsefall Frodsham, Bishop who for some reason felt the need to sign his name on the title page) the red cloth is faded but otherwise a tight clean copy. SHIBDEN HALL – Halifax

A strange on one this, a 12X9 folder produces (undated) by Calderdale Museums Service. Entrance to the Hall was Adults 15P and Children 8P so after 1971 but I suspect not long after, the telephone number was 52246.

This consists of a folder with loose pages (A4) 32 pages in all printed on glossy paper, there is no index so I can’t tell if any pages are missing. The cover is a bit dusty but the inserts are as new, well illustrated.

The piece on Ann Lister fails to mention her sexuality.
