Corgi 1955 1st vg Of Their Own Choice was the first of three books describing his wartime experience in the French section of the Special Operations Executive. He describes his initial training at Warnborough Manor, near Guildford, in sabotage, Morse code, use of firearms, bridge demolition, and French military drill; and then to the Scottish Highlands near Mallaig, for map reading, orienteering, weapons and explosives training, close combat, and physical training; and then parachute training at Ringway near Manchester. The final training was at the Finishing School at Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest where he learnt railway sabotage, inconspicuous behaviour, codes, cover stories, how to build up networks, and how to behave under interrogation. Of 14 people who began the training, Churchill was one of only three who graduated. He was assigned to the French Section in June 1941, and given his French identity card with a false identity. His first mission was to be infiltrated into the French Riviera by submarine in order to inspect three SOE networks in Antibes, Marseille and Lyons, evaluate their strengths weaknesses, assess their needs, and give them instructions. He was also to provide them with funds to continue their work. He was assisted by American agent, Virginia Hall. Having completed his mission he crossed the Pyrenees on foot and returned to the UK via Gibraltar to report back to SOE Headquarters. I Thought I had a good collection of his works, I knew he was prolific ( not John Creasey or Michael Moorcock prolific but prolific just the same) over 70 books. I do have, paperbacks, hardbacks, hardbacks with dust jackets and some 1st editions (one signed) in stock, mostly at £2.50 each but a few at £5.00. I have highlighted titles I have in stock in red on the bibliography below.

Dennis Yates Wheatley (1897 – 1977) was an English author whose prolific output of stylish thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world’s best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was one of the main inspirations for Ian Fleming’s James Bond stories.

Born in South London, he was the eldest of three children of an upper-middle-class family, the owners of Wheatley & Son of Mayfair, a wine business. He admitted to little aptitude for schooling, and was expelled from Dulwich College. Soon after his expulsion Wheatley became a British Merchant Navy officer cadet on the training ship HMS Worcester.

During the Second World War, Wheatley was a member of the London Controlling Section, which secretly coordinated strategic military deception and cover plans. His literary talents gained him employment with planning staffs for the War Office. He wrote numerous papers for the War Office, including suggestions for dealing with a German invasion of Britain.

Dennis Wheatley died on 11th November 1977. During his life he wrote over 70 books and sold over 50 million copies.

Unseen Harbour by Frank Laskier

“The Famous Novel of the Sea”Frank Laskier was born 1912 and lived his early years in the suburbs of Liverpool. As a teenager, Frank was an avid reader of Conrad and Masefield and had a romantic view of the “call of the sea”. One day he decided to lie about his age and run away from home aboard a ship destined for Australia. Laskier worked on many ships in the merchant navy and it was his experiences during the Second World War that brought him to the attention of the BBC. Frank was asked to broadcast a number of talks on his life at sea during that dangerous time. These talks were a great success. The positive feedback from his radio talks lead to Laskier turning to writing. This book, first published in 1947, was his final work. This novel that is a fictional account of the merchant ship MV Francis Hall as it sails from England across the Atlantic. The story is set just after the horrors of the Second World War, when the traumatic memories of the perils of the sea during that time are still fresh in the memories of the crew. Stronach, the bosun, was expecting the voyage to be a smooth passage, bit it soon becomes a test of his mettle as a man and sailor.
