This is what Beacon says about their copy that they are asking £40.00 for ” Beacon Publishing Co., [ca.1949]. First edition. “Diana Wilton looked extremely attractive that afternoon sitting on the lounge in the smart sitting-room of her Chelsea flat and smiling across at me through the drifting smoke of her cigarette”. According to his publishers, Paul Rénin “knows women better than they know themselves” – suspicious wife, glamorous widow, famous actress, etc. Crown 8vo (19cm). 112pp. Original pictorial stapled wrappers; some wear to spine; some internal creasing; a reasonable copy of an uncommon title. A strange listing but it might light a light somewhere. A typical “Mushroom” offering from Pictorial Art Ltd. 23 Bloomsbury Square London WC 1. a small 32 page booklet with four stories. Imperial Overture by D H Hatfull, Of Unsound Mind by Gae Lyster, Ali the Faithful by V J Hanson and The Lighthouse Prison by D K Howe.
The only one who managers a presence on Google is V J Hanson who was writing under various names in the early 50’s with even a couple of Sexton Blake credits. I can’t find a lot about the publishers either, I am estimating round about 1950 (give or take 3 or 4 years) as it is undated.

A “Mushroom” Publishers example, 32 (though it says 31 on last page) small booklet 6″ X 4″,. The “Mushroom” period is a reference to the times of paper rationing during and after WWII. Ex servicemen were offered a paper ration as a “resettlement initiative” that was after books were published on any paper that could be found, some were printed on greaseproof butter wrappers, and were very short, though this example is particularly small and short.

My records tell me I have a copy of the UK Gold Medal version, but I can’t locate it, I was interested what their take on the cover was. I have seen two later US versions where she is basically in the same pose but with red hair. For some reason this cover makes me think of Shirly MacLaine, either in “The Apartment” or “Irma La Douce”

I am posting this text from home and have been more than surprised about how little Google or Wikipedia have on this author, not only because he was so prolific, but also the pivotal roll he had in the UK censorship fiasco that culminated in the stage managed Lady Chatterley Show Trial.
The persecution he faced in the UK that saw him move to Spain to avoid arrest, Reginald Head (the illustrator of many Hank Janson titles) changing his name to Cy Webb and the publishers ending up in jail. All of these “facts” may not be true as I am relying on my memory, though I am sure I have a full account of the trials and tribulations somewhere in the shop.

Today the vast majority of people will not even have heard of Hank Janson but the number of books he sold in the 50’s and 60’s far outstrips the number sold by Booker Prize winners, yet the “inteligencia” look down their privileged noses at “Popular fiction” or in this case “Hard Boiled Fiction”.
Granted the covers on these 60’s example are not a patch on the covers Reginald Head was driven out of the country for painting. The persecution and trials of the 50’s is a fascinating story in itself culminating as it did in the fake, arranged Lady Chatterley Trial that voiced the now notorious test of respectability “Would you let your servant read that”
However I digress, as a great lover of the 50’s art work, and not totally unmoved by later covers, I have over the years assembled significant examples of the genre, Hank Janson in particular. I realise that the market for this important contribution to literature is rapidly declining, a pity in many ways, not least my ability to sell copies.
